SZYUNZE, September 29 — On September 27, Microsoft published a blog post detailing the “Recall” feature in Windows 11, aiming to deliver an advanced AI experience alongside Windows 11 AI+ PC devices.
The blog addressed the security controversies surrounding the “Recall” feature and announced four key security and privacy design principles. The relevant information from IT Home is as follows:
- All data is always under the user’s control.
- Sensitive data in Recall is always encrypted, with keys being protected.
- Recall isolates and stores screenshots and related data.
- Users have control over their experience with Recall.
Microsoft emphasized that the design of the Recall feature considers user privacy, ensuring all sensitive data is encrypted and providing a secure isolated environment through VBS Enclave.
Recall is a voluntary experience, allowing users to choose to enable or disable it, and it supports secure authentication via Windows Hello, ensuring that only authorized users can access snapshots and related data.
Additionally, the security and privacy design principles of Recall adhere to zero trust principles, protecting data through encryption, isolation, and proactive user awareness.
Recall also offers rich privacy controls, enabling users to manage their data, including the ability to delete, pause, and turn off snapshots.
The core components of the Recall architecture include Secure Settings, Semantic Index, Snapshot Store, Recall User Experience, and Snapshot Service, all of which work together to ensure the secure storage and processing of data.
