WD Shifts SSD Business to SanDisk, Prioritizes HDDs

Recently, an internal resolution made by Western Digital on February 24 was exposed:

The company (brand) will terminate and fully exit the solid-state drive (SSD) business, transferring this segment entirely to its subsidiary SanDisk. Moving forward, Western Digital will continue focusing on traditional mechanical hard drives.

It is reported that this decision is primarily related to AI. Western Digital CEO Irving Tan stated:

“For decades, our company has been committed to providing top-tier mechanical hard drives. With the rapid advancement of AI and its deepening impact on industries worldwide, we see tremendous opportunities ahead.”

In the future, the volume of data generated and stored for AI applications is expected to grow significantly, leading to an increase in mechanical hard drive shipments. Additionally, the majority of data stored by cloud service providers—such as native cloud application data, media, and machine learning data—still runs on mechanical hard drives.

Against this backdrop, the demand for mechanical hard drives is projected to remain strong. After divesting from the SSD business, Western Digital will continue to prioritize mechanical hard drive research and development.

Overall, for regular consumers, this move means that Western Digital-branded SSDs will no longer be available in the market. To be fair, Western Digital has produced some classic products, such as the WD Black SN850X (see image above).

However, there’s no need to be too sentimental, as this change is mostly about rebranding with a different name and logo. Stay tuned as we bring you more updates and insights as soon as they become available.
