On October 22, news from Zhongshi News Network reported that a construction safety accident occurred at TSMC’s Fab 20 wafer factory in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan, on the 18th, resulting in the death of a 52-year-old worker surnamed Huang, who allegedly died from electrocution.
According to police reports, the incident happened around 2 PM on the 18th when a worker found Huang accidentally electrocuted while working and falling from a height. Emergency calls were made, and on-site medical personnel and an ambulance were contacted, but Huang was unfortunately pronounced dead later that evening around 7 PM.
Since there were no cameras on site, police found no signs of a struggle. The case has been referred to the Hsinchu District Prosecutor’s Office for investigation, and TSMC’s safety committee has been asked to report to the Hsinchu Science Park Administration for occupational safety checks. An initial inspection completed on the 20th suggested the cause was electrocution shock.
In response, the Hsinchu Science Park Administration stated that work has been halted to investigate the cause of the workplace accident and to determine if there were any oversights.
TSMC indicated that power distribution in the office buildings is currently halted pending further investigation of the incident. The construction site is within the contractual scope of delivery, and TSMC will fully cooperate with the investigation and assist the subcontractor in handling subsequent matters.
Data shows that TSMC’s Hsinchu Fab 20 wafer factory is part of the Baoshan Phase II expansion plan and is set to become a hub for 2nm production, consisting of four 12-inch 2nm wafer fabs across phases one to four. Risk production is expected to begin in the second half of 2024, with mass production starting in 2025.
Previously, TSMC’s Baoshan Phase I expansion also saw accidents. In February 2021, a 52-year-old foreman surnamed Lan fell about 9 meters while picking up a board, resulting in his death. In May 2021, a bulldozer inadvertently knocked down a power line pole, injuring a 28-year-old female contractor, who sustained a skull fracture and was hospitalized.
