They are varying grades of flash memory. SLC (single-layer cell memory) stores a one-bit value per cell and MLC (multi-layer cell memory) stores multiple-bit values per cell. While MLC has a greater density for storage and lowers the cost per bit, SLC typically has greater endurance with 100,000 cycles versus MLC’s 10,000 cycles. SLC can also operate at higher temperatures.
