On May 9, SK Hynix announced that it has developed the “ZUFS (Zoned UFS) 4.0” mobile NAND flash solution product for on-device AI.

Smartphones, PCs, and other terminal devices collect and process information independently, improving AI response speed and enhancing user-customized AI service functionality.
According to SK Hynix, ZUFS (Zoned Universal Flash Storage) is a new product designed to improve data management efficiency in UFS (Universal Flash Storage), commonly used in digital cameras, mobile phones, and other electronic products. It stores data with similar characteristics in the same “zone,” effectively managing data to optimize data transfer between the operating system and storage.
SK Hynix stated, “ZUFS 4.0 is the next-generation mobile NAND flash solution product, achieving the industry’s highest performance and optimized specifically for on-device AI mobile phones.”
The company explained that ZUFS manages smartphone application-generated data according to its unique characteristics. Unlike existing UFS, which mixes storage without partitioning, ZUFS partitions data for different purposes and usage frequencies, improving operating system speed and storage management efficiency.
As a result, ZUFS improves application runtime by about 45% compared to current UFS in long-term usage and achieves more than a fourfold improvement in reducing storage read/write performance degradation, thus increasing product lifespan by about 40%.
SK Hynix will initially provide trial products and collaborate with customers to develop 4.0 products that meet JEDEC standards. The company will begin mass production of ZUFS 4.0 in the third quarter of this year, and the mass-produced products will be installed in global smartphone companies’ future on-device AI smartphones.
