On March 24, according to media reports, SK Hynix plans to invest in building a massive semiconductor production park in Yeoju City, the central part of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, with an investment of at least 120 trillion South Korean won (about 90.7 billion US dollars).
It is reported that the new semiconductor production park will include four independent wafer fabs and will become one of the largest three-story wafer fabs in the world.
SK Hynix announced the development plan in 2019, but the development was delayed due to licensing issues. SK Hynix stated that the plan has progressed through an agreement reached in 2022 with the central and local governments and enterprises.
According to SK Hynix’s plan, the new production park is scheduled to officially break ground in March 2025, the first wafer fab is expected to be completed in 2027, and the construction of the entire park is expected to be fully completed by 2046.
Currently, there is no clear news about the specific production direction of the first wafer fab, that is, whether it will produce DRAM or NAND flash memory chips.
However, considering the current strong demand in the artificial intelligence market for HBM products and SK Hynix’s capacity strain, this direction is likely to be a key focus.
It is understood that the four wafer fabs will occupy half of the park area, and SK Hynix will also build a large number of supporting facilities in the park, such as a wastewater treatment plant.
In addition to SK Hynix, Samsung has also chosen to build a similar semiconductor production park nearby, which includes a research and development center.
