SanDisk Launches PCIe 5.0 SSD: Just 7W Power Consumption

Compared to PCIe 4.0, the performance improvement of PCIe 5.0 is significant, with its bandwidth increasing from 16 GT/s to 32 GT/s, as shown in the table above.

However, as with everything, there are trade-offs. The significant performance boost means that the workload on the controller and storage chips of solid-state drives (SSDs) increases within a given period, leading to higher power consumption and temperatures. Therefore, cooling for PCIe 5.0 SSDs becomes much more challenging, and minimizing power consumption has become a key goal for related manufacturers.

Currently, the power consumption of mainstream PCIe 4.0 SSDs is around 7W, while PCIe 5.0 SSDs consume around 10W. However, this situation is about to change.

Recently, SanDisk announced the launch of a PCIe 5.0 SSD, featuring the Silicon Motion SM2508 controller (as shown in the image below) and BiCS8 3D NAND chips from Western Digital and Kioxia.

In terms of performance, the sequential read speed is 14,500 MB/s, and the sequential write speed is 14,000 MB/s. However, the most notable aspect is that the overall power consumption is only around 7W, which is on par with current mainstream PCIe 4.0 SSDs, a rare achievement.

The SSD is expected to come in multiple capacity versions, ranging from 512GB to 4TB, and is anticipated to officially launch in the second quarter of this year. I will share more related updates and leaks as soon as possible, so stay tuned.
