RTX 4070 Ti SUPER vs RX 6950 XT: How Big's the Gap?

On April 15, 2023, I shared a gaming performance review of the GeForce RTX 4070 VS Radeon RX 6950 XT, with the result showing the GeForce RTX 4070 slightly trailing behind, though the gap was very small.

On January 8, 2024, NVIDIA released the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER, which boasts significantly higher performance than the GeForce RTX 4070. This time, I will share a gaming performance review of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER VS Radeon RX 6950 XT.

The result of this comparison is almost a foregone conclusion: the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER’s performance is stronger. However, the real question this article aims to explore is just how much stronger it is.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER was released on January 8, 2024. It uses the AD103-275 GPU, based on the Ada Lovelace architecture, with TSMC’s 5nm process. It features 8,448 CUDA cores, 264 texture units, 96 raster units, 66 ray tracing units, 66 multiprocessor units, 264 tensor cores, and 64MB of L2 cache.

The standard operating frequency is 2340 MHz, with a maximum operating frequency of 2610 MHz. It is equipped with 16GB of GDDR6X memory, with a 256-bit memory bus width, a memory speed of 22.4 Gbps, and a memory bandwidth of 716.8 GB/s. Its FP32 floating-point performance is 44.10 TFLOPS, with a power consumption of 285W, and a suggested retail price of $799.

The Radeon RX 6950 XT was released on May 10, 2022. It uses the Navi 21 GPU, with TSMC’s 7nm process. It features 5,120 stream processors, 128 raster units, 320 texture units, 80 compute units, and 80 ray tracing units. It has 4MB of L2 cache and 96MB of L3 cache.

The standard operating frequency is 1860 MHz, with a maximum operating frequency of 2310 MHz. It is equipped with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, with a 256-bit memory bus width, a memory speed of 18 Gbps, and a memory bandwidth of 576 GB/s. Its FP32 floating-point performance is 23.65 TFLOPS, with a power consumption of 355W, and a suggested retail price of $1099.

The main configuration is as follows:

The processor is a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the motherboard is an MSI MPG X670E CARBON, the memory is 32GB DDR5 6000MHz, the storage consists of two Samsung 970 EVO SSDs, and the operating system is Windows 11.

The following tests are conducted on seven games, all set to 1440P with the highest graphics quality. In the series of images below, the left side represents the Radeon RX 6950 XT platform, and the right side represents the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER platform.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER platform has an average FPS that is 14 FPS higher than the Radeon RX 6950 XT platform, leading by approximately 20%. It also has 13 FPS higher minimum FPS, about 4ms lower frame time, 56W lower power consumption, and 1°C lower temperature.

As predicted earlier, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER leads in all game tests, outperforming its competitors significantly in various metrics, especially in terms of temperature and power consumption.

Based on the average frame rate performance across various games, the overall performance of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is approximately 14% higher than that of the Radeon RX 6950 XT. This is the conclusion of the article.

However, when buying a graphics card, you can’t just consider performance without considering price. At this stage, it’s practically impossible to buy the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER at its original price, so discussing the comparison of their official suggested retail prices is meaningless.

The current market price of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is about 6500 yuan, while the Radeon RX 6950 XT is only about 4000 yuan, at least 2000 yuan cheaper, making it a much better value for money.

The conclusion is that if you highly value productivity performance and have a sufficient budget, you should prioritize getting the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER. If you are a pure gamer and value cost-effectiveness, then the Radeon RX 6950 XT is the better choice.
