PCIe 6.0 SSD Controllers in Development by Silicon Motion

Recently, Silicon Motion, a leading company in the storage controller chip sector, announced the development of a PCIe 6.0 SSD controller chip based on advanced 4nm process technology, model SM8466. This chip will support PCIe 6.0 x4 channels with a theoretical bandwidth of up to 30.25 GB/s, doubling the bandwidth compared to the existing PCIe 5.0 x4 interface.

Judging from the naming convention, Silicon Motion’s previously released PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSD controller chips were SM8266 and SM8366, respectively. Thus, it can be inferred that the SM8466 will also primarily target the enterprise market. As a high-end product, the SM8466 not only offers exceptional performance but also integrates advanced security features aimed at providing more reliable data protection for enterprise users.

In addition, the SM8466 supports next-generation 3D TLC and 3D QLC NAND flash technologies, which will further enhance storage density and cost-effectiveness to meet enterprise demands for large-scale data storage.

With the introduction of the PCIe 6.0 standard, SSDs will achieve new breakthroughs in theoretical read and write speeds. However, higher performance also means increased power consumption and heat generation. To address this, Silicon Motion chose the more advanced 4nm process technology for the SM8466 to effectively reduce power consumption and heat, ensuring the product’s stability and reliability.

Currently, the most advanced process used in Silicon Motion’s released controller chips is the 6nm process in the SM2508. The launch of the SM8466 marks another significant step forward in process technology for Silicon Motion and lays the groundwork for the widespread adoption of PCIe 6.0 SSDs.
