Recently, I’ve written many articles about PC games, and in the comments section, there’s a recurring opinion among readers that PC and PC gaming have declined, with mobile gaming being the mainstream and future.
This perspective is quite one-sided and incorrect. From what I’ve gathered, the sales of gaming graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD targeted at regular gamers have been increasing, and the number of users on the Steam platform continues to grow.
Additionally, there is a critical and objective measure: sales and revenue data from major game companies. If PC gaming were truly in decline, their sales and revenue would undoubtedly decrease.
On the contrary, if sales and revenue are not only stable but increasing, it clearly shows that the PC gaming market remains solid. So, what’s the reality?
Here, I’d like to share data from a familiar name, Capcom, for the first quarter of 2024. The data is sourced from Capcom’s official release on May 9.
As of March 31, 2024, Capcom’s first-quarter net sales reached 152.41 billion yen, approximately $9.8 billion, up 21.0% year over year. Operating profit was 57.081 billion yen, a 12.3% increase, and ordinary profit reached 59.422 billion yen, up 15.7%. Net profit attributable to the parent company’s owners was 43.374 billion yen, an increase of 18.1%.
Capcom sold nearly 45.89 million copies of its games in the first quarter. Here are some key figures:
- Monster Hunter World: 2.8 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 25.3 million copies.
- Monster Hunter World: Iceborne: 2.3 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 12.6 million copies.
- Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak: 2.2 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 7.7 million copies.
- Resident Evil 2: 2 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 13.9 million copies.
- Monster Hunter Rise: 1.9 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 14.7 million copies.
- Resident Evil 8 Village: 1.8 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 9.8 million copies.
- Resident Evil 3: 1.7 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 8.7 million copies.
- Resident Evil 7: 1.3 million copies sold in Q1, with a cumulative total of 13.3 million copies.
This list shows that even though Capcom has been criticized for repeatedly remastering its various Resident Evil series games, often referred to as “recycling old content,” these remastered versions are selling well, with many players still willing to buy them.
Overall, Capcom’s performance in the first quarter of 2024 was promising, showing strong growth. In the coming months, Capcom is expected to release several high-profile games, including Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil 9. According to recent rumors, Resident Evil 9 is set for a January 2025 release.
In conclusion, while mobile gaming offers portability, PC gaming delivers graphics and experiences unmatched by mobile games. It has unique advantages and appeal, making a decline in the short term unlikely. Simply put, the king remains the king.
