Transferring files between computers can often feel cumbersome, especially for small files. Many people still use USB drives or upload files to the cloud and download them onto another computer. For those with networking knowledge, file sharing over a network is also an option.
If you regularly use USB drives or are familiar with network settings, that works fine. You can easily manage file transfers.
However, Windows offers a better built-in method for copying small files: Nearby Sharing. This feature has been around for years and is available on Windows 10 and 11. It’s fast and user-friendly.
Here’s how to use Nearby Sharing:
Step 1: Enable Nearby Sharing
- Open the search from the taskbar or Start menu, type “share,” and select “Share experiences settings.”
- In the Share experiences settings window, find Nearby Sharing and toggle “Share content with nearby devices using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi” to On.
Step 2: Share Files Between Computers
- Right-click the file you want to share, then choose “Share” from the context menu. Alternatively, in File Explorer, you can select “Share” > “Share” from the ribbon menu.
- You should see the name of the receiving PC in the available devices list. Click it to send the share request and accept it via your Windows notifications (check the notification center if no pop-up appears).
- You can freely transfer files between Windows 10 and 11 PCs without being limited by operating system versions.
Nearby Sharing is not always the fastest method, especially compared to direct Wi-Fi or cloud uploads for larger files. However, for small files like smartphone photos or screenshots, the difference is less noticeable. It also ensures more privacy as files are only available locally on respective computers.
