Micron Exits MLC Market, Flash Memory Prices Soaring

Following Samsung Electronics, there are rumors that Micron Technology will also exit the low-capacity MLC product market. Benefiting from recent price hikes by major manufacturers and news of their market exits, Taiwanese suppliers have seen increases in both pricing and orders.

These market developments continue to support the upward trend in storage prices.

It is reported in the industry that Samsung has been planning to exit the MLC market since the end of last year, accepting orders only until June this year. The timeline for final shipments remains unclear.

However, since the beginning of this year, order prices have been increasing month by month. Prices for MLC products have risen by more than 60%.

Micron is also expected to follow suit by planning to exit the supply of low-capacity MLC products, though this has yet to be confirmed.

Thanks to the favorable news of price hikes and market exits by major players, the industry expects positive impacts on the operations of Macronix and certain module manufacturers. ADATA stated that the prices of related products have indeed increased recently.

MLC refers to Multi-Level Cell NAND Flash, a technology where each storage cell can hold more than one bit of information, enabling more data storage in the same chip space.

Currently, the mainstream NAND Flash chips are transitioning from TLC to QLC specifications. MLC is mainly used in niche markets, so overall supply changes have limited impact on the industry.
