On September 26th, local time, Scott Herkelman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMD’s Graphics Business Unit, announced that he would leave the company at the end of this year.
Scott Herkelman posted this message on social media: ‘After working at AMD for seven years and launching three generations of the increasingly competitive RDNA graphics architecture, I have decided to leave AMD at the end of this year.’ He also wrote a message wishing the AMD graphics department well, saying, ‘May you continue to punch above your weight, someday… defeat the final boss.’
The ‘final boss’ is widely interpreted as AMD’s only competitor in the GPU industry, which is also Scott Herkelman’s former employer—NVIDIA.
Despite AMD’s ‘revenge’ against Intel in the CPU domain over the past five years and successful acquisitions of major companies like Xilinx and the stabilization of Intel’s Altera division, the GPU sector continues to be firmly controlled by NVIDIA.
Herkelman has been the head of AMD’s GPU business since 2016, and this news has disappointed many AMD fans.
During his tenure at AMD, Herkelman played a crucial role in the development and success of multiple product generations, including RDNA 2, RNDA 3, and RDNA 4. Before his time at AMD, Herkelman served as the General Manager of GeForce at NVIDIA, possessing top-tier product technology and management skills in the GPU industry.
Herkelman’s departure has sparked speculation within the industry regarding AMD’s future product plans. Herkelman himself has expressed his hopes for better product planning in the future, leaving many curious about what changes might occur under new leadership at AMD.
Currently, there are two prevailing speculations in the industry. One suggests that he might join Intel to oversee the development of highly anticipated consumer-grade GPUs and AI products. The other possibility is that he may return to NVIDIA.
As the year-end approaches, all eyes will be on AMD and its upcoming products. Undoubtedly, without Herkelman’s guidance, the company will face challenges in maintaining its success. Only time will tell how the departure of this heavyweight figure will impact AMD’s development trajectory.
Following Herkelman’s departure, AMD announced that Jack Huynh would take over the Graphics Business Unit. This means that he will be responsible for all of AMD’s consumer products, including client computing, semi-custom, and the latest Graphics Business Unit.
Previously, he served as the Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Semi-Custom Business Unit, overseeing various aspects of AMD’s semi-custom solutions in Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, and Valve Steam Deck.
