In recent times, when Intel is mentioned, digital hardware enthusiasts focus on the upcoming Lunar Lake laptop processors and Arrow Lake desktop processors, both slated for release in the latter half of the year.
In processor development, the industry follows a rule of producing one generation, researching the next, and pre-researching another simultaneously. This means that when one generation starts mass production, the next is already in mid-stage development.
On August 6, U.S. time, Intel announced preliminary development completion of the Panther Lake processors, based on the Intel 18A process. These processors successfully booted and ran Windows without additional configurations or modifications, although no display images were provided.
The Panther Lake series includes consumer-grade AI PC processors and Clearwater Forest server processors. Kevin O’Buckley, Intel’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Foundry Services, confirmed successful internal use and early completion of product certification milestones for both processor types.
Intel’s Intel 18A process, equivalent to 1.8nm technology, features RibbonFET nanosheet transistor technology and PowerVia backside power delivery. Panther Lake processors are scheduled for production in 2025 without specifying exact dates.
Additionally, Intel plans to offer its Intel 18A process to third parties for chip manufacturing services, emphasizing collaboration to innovate for the AI era.
In July, Intel released the Intel 18A Process Design Kit (PDK) 1.0, EDA and IP tools, and related reference materials to third-party chip designers, aiming to facilitate chip designs using the Intel 18A process.
Intel anticipates its first customer adopting the Intel 18A process for chip manufacturing in the first half of next year, although the identity of this customer remains undisclosed.
While development of Intel’s Intel 18A process and Panther Lake processors appears promising, details remain limited as they are still in the early stages. Further updates will be shared promptly as developments unfold.
