First Raspberry Pi SSD: Compact M.2 2230, PCIe 3.0 Ready

On October 24, it was reported that Raspberry Pi officially announced the launch of its own brand of solid-state drives on October 23, local time in the UK, further expanding its first-party storage product line following the previous microSD cards.

The Raspberry Pi 5, released in 2023, introduced the FPC form of PCIe interface for the first time in the Raspberry Pi series of single-board computers/development boards. The official Raspberry Pi team has also launched the M.2 HAT+ expansion board and developed an AI kit based on this expansion board.

According to previous blog posts by tech enthusiast and software developer Jeff Geerling, this FPC form interface defaults to PCIe 2.0×1 but can be forced to enable PCIe 3.0 (with some stability issues in certain cases).

The solid-state drives launched by Raspberry Pi are in the M.2 2230 form factor, use a PCIe 3.0 interface, and support the NVMe 1.4 protocol. They have an operating temperature range of 0℃ to +70℃ and are committed to production until at least January 2032.

The Raspberry Pi SSDs come in two capacities: 256GB and 512GB, with the 512GB version clearly labeled as manufactured by BIWIN, while the 256GB product label has no related information.

In terms of performance, Raspberry Pi has only specified the 4KB random read and write speeds for its SSDs: the 256GB version can achieve random read and write speeds of 40K and 70K IOPS, respectively, while the 512GB version can achieve 50K and 90K IOPS.

As for pricing, the Raspberry Pi SSD is priced at $30 for the 256GB model (approximately 214 RMB), while the 512GB version is priced at $45 (approximately 321 RMB). The SSD Kit, which includes the official M.2 HAT+, is $10 more expensive but saves $2 compared to purchasing the SSD and expansion board separately.
