Response time refers to the time it takes for liquid crystal molecules to change colors, typically measured from gray-to-gray transitions. Slow response times can lead to image blurring. Generally, gaming monitors have a response time of 1ms, standard TN monitors around 5ms, and standard IPS monitors tend to be higher.
Take a 144Hz monitor as an example: it refreshes 144 frames per second, meaning each frame is displayed for 6.9ms. If the response time is too high, it could take 5ms for the previous frame to fully transition, causing a lingering “ghost” of the previous frame on the screen, which makes the image unclear.
Currently, IPS panels are still struggling to achieve a 1ms response time, which is why TN panels are preferred for gaming monitors.
In competitive gaming, blurry images can lead to player mistakes. Take CSas an example: on the Dust2 map, after planting the bomb in A site, if a counter-terrorist emerges from the B site doors, a slow response time may cause a ghosting effect, making it harder to judge movement. In a fast-paced game where split-second reactions matter, slow response times can result in losing the match.
That said, the advantage of faster response times is mostly evident in FPS games. These games require quick reactions, so lower response times are beneficial. For casual users or players of slower-paced games, 1ms response time might not be a top priority.
Response time isn’t the only indicator of a monitor’s quality—factors like color accuracy, contrast, and refresh rate are also important.
Moreover, watch out for misleading “1ms MPRT” claims from manufacturers. This refers to the fastest possible response time achieved through overdrive (increasing the liquid crystal voltage). However, this can cause issues like image blurring, flickering, and ghosting, making it less meaningful for real-world use.
