On June 19th, a piece of news was shared by our editor: a hacker named IntelBroker claimed on a forum to have obtained a large amount of sensitive data from AMD, with the intention to sell it, leading to a “suspected data breach” at AMD.
The specific data and contents included unreleased product information, specification sheets, employee databases, customer databases, asset documents, ROMs, source code, firmware, etc. To prove the authenticity of this data, IntelBroker also released several data screenshots, which appeared highly credible overall.
However, at that time, AMD only stated that it was investigating the incident with relevant law enforcement agencies and partners and did not directly confirm whether a data breach had occurred. Therefore, to be cautious, the title and content of the editor’s article included “suspected” and “suspected data breach” at AMD, and promised to share more updates as soon as possible.
Recently, AMD has given an official response, confirming that the incident indeed involved a data breach. They stated that the data was stolen due to the inadequate security of a third-party hosting platform, not because of any intrusion into servers owned or operated by AMD itself.
Regarding the data breach, the public’s main concern is the extent of the negative impact it will have on AMD. An AMD spokesperson responded as follows:
“According to our investigation, the amount of (leaked data) related to the specifications used to assemble certain AMD products is very limited. This information was leaked on a third-party vendor’s website, and this data breach will not have a significant impact on our business or operations.”
However, AMD did not address how they plan to handle the leaked data, such as whether they will pay a ransom to recover it. The editor will share more updates as soon as they become available, so please stay tuned.
