ASML Sues 3 People Over Massive Chip Technology Leak

According to a report by Dutch public broadcaster NOS, a former employee of ASML Holding NV is facing trial in the Netherlands for allegedly stealing trade secrets, marking the latest violation for the advanced chip manufacturing equipment maker.

The defendant is a 43-year-old Russian engineer, accused of stealing documents such as ASML’s chip manuals, and is expected to have appeared in Rotterdam court on Monday (9th). He is charged with multiple violations of sanctions regulations and has been banned from entering the Netherlands for 20 years by the Dutch government.

According to Nieuwsuur, the entry ban was imposed by the Minister for Asylum and Immigration, Marjolein Faber. Such bans are rare and are only applied when national security is at risk.

The accused Russian engineer previously worked for the Dutch company Mapper Lithography, which declared bankruptcy in 2018.

ASML also accused a former employee last year of stealing chip-related data. According to Bloomberg, the former worker extracted data from the company’s software system used to store machine technology information.

ASML had previously accused engineers of transferring technology. According to court records, one engineer was accused of stealing the entire 2 million lines of source code of critical ASML software and sharing part of the code with employees of a related company in the U.S.
