On September 27, Google India officially posted on X to celebrate its 26th anniversary. Although the company was officially registered on September 4, 1998, it chose September 27 as its commemorative date.
Google’s origins trace back to 1996 when two Stanford University PhD students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, were conducting a research project called “BackRub.” As their research progressed, this project gradually evolved into the search engine we know today, and Google was officially founded in 1998.
To celebrate this special day, Google India’s official account shared a message: “Since September 27, 1998, we’ve come a long way, leaving countless wonderful memories #HappyBirthdayGoogle.” This brief message conveyed Google’s gratitude to its users. They also shared an image of the first search interface from 1998, showing Google’s original logo and noting that the search engine had indexed 25 million pages at that time. Today, the number of indexed pages has reached hundreds of billions, reflecting the massive expansion of the internet over the past two decades.
Google’s success is largely attributed to its innovative PageRank algorithm. This algorithm ranks web pages by analyzing their relevance and importance, particularly through backlinks, which distinguished Google from other search engines of the time that mainly relied on keyword frequency to determine page quality.
Since its founding, Google has evolved from a simple search engine into a leading global technology company, offering a wide range of products and services, including search, advertising, cloud computing, hardware, and software. Today, Google’s CEO is Sundar Pichai, of Indian descent, who plays a crucial role in the company’s strategy and development.
