mrxSwitch v2.0 Launches: BOM cost only at $7

According to the latest news, the underwater robotics team Murex Robotics at Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA) has created what is claimed to be the world’s smallest network switch, the mrxSwitch v2.0, and its price is significantly lower than similar products.

The mrxSwitch v2.0 is specifically designed for remote-controlled underwater vehicles, providing five 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, with dimensions of only 44.9mm x 42.2mm.

The main purpose of designing this network switch is for remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) or autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), but the team also states that the switch is suitable for various embedded devices.

In the cases shared by the Murex Robotics team, the switch is used to facilitate communication between Raspberry Pi, NUC, or other computers with IP cameras, drive motors, or other tools to operate underwater robots.

The switch is equipped with five beige 4-Pin ports, using Molex PicoBlade connections, which save more space compared to RJ-45 ports.

The integrated chip responsible for switching on the board is smaller than a fingernail, and the largest component is a dual-port transformer, which is only slightly longer than a fingertip. Compared to its predecessor, the mrxSwitch v2.0 has reduced its size by 30% and its BOM cost by 15%, with the current material cost being $7.
