Windows 11 24H2: What's Being Removed?

Microsoft has now released the preview version of Windows 11 24H2, this year’s major annual Windows update. But note: when Microsoft installs 24H2 on your Windows 11 computer, many old applications and features will be permanently removed, including Cortana, Tips, and WordPad.

Microsoft’s statement about Cortana:

“Cortana in Windows as a standalone app has been deprecated. This change only affects Cortana in Windows. Your productivity assistant Cortana is still available in Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, Microsoft Teams Display, and Microsoft Teams Rooms.”

Regarding the Tips app:

“The Tips app has been deprecated and will be removed in the next version of Windows. Until the app is removed, the content in the app will continue to be updated with information on new Windows features.”

Regarding WordPad:

“WordPad will no longer be updated and will be removed in the next version of Windows. We recommend using Microsoft Word for rich text documents such as .doc and .rtf, and Windows Notepad for plain text documents such as .txt. WordPad will be removed from all versions starting with Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025.”

However, the list of applications and features being removed in the upcoming update—or later, as Microsoft is not removing all considered outdated features in the fall of 2024 but states they “may be removed in future releases”—is much longer.

Microsoft explained this in a statement, saying some well-known applications will be removed in the 24H2 version:

“Each version of the Windows client adds new features and functionalities. Occasionally, new versions also remove certain features and functionalities, usually because newer options have been added. This article provides details about features and functionalities no longer being developed for the Windows client.”

Microsoft listed all “Windows client deprecated features,” including many features Microsoft has already removed. Most of these are of interest only to administrators or professional Windows users, but some of the removed applications may affect personal users.

Steps Recorder has also been marked for removal, so if you want to record problems or step-by-step instructions on your PC, you can use the Snipping Tool. Microsoft is also removing the scripting language VBScript.
