Discover Arm Cortex-X925 CPU & Immortalis G925 GPU

Yesterday, it was reported that chip design company Arm today released next-generation CPU and GPU designs for flagship smartphones: the Cortex-X925 CPU and the Immortalis G925 GPU. These two chips are the successors of the Cortex-X4 and Immortalis G720 currently used in MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 processor.

It has been noted that Arm has changed the naming scheme of the Cortex-X CPU series to highlight the significant performance improvement. The company claims that the single-core performance of the X925 is 36% higher than that of the X4 (based on Geekbench tests). Thanks to up to 3MB of private L2 cache, Arm states that the AI workload performance of the X925 (measured by “time to token”) has increased by 41%.

The Cortex-X925 also introduces the next generation of Cortex-A microarchitecture (“small” cores), namely the Cortex-A725 and Cortex-A520. Arm claims that the performance efficiency of the Cortex-A725 is 35% higher than the previous generation A720, and the energy efficiency of the Cortex-A520 has also increased by 15%.

Arm states that the brand new Immortalis G925 GPU is their “highest performing and most efficient GPU to date.” Compared to the previous generation G720, its graphics application performance has increased by 37%, ray tracing performance for handling complex objects has increased by 52%, AI and machine learning workload performance has increased by 34%, and power consumption has decreased by 30%.

Notably, Arm is providing an “optimized layout” for the new CPU and GPU designs for the first time, which is said to make it easier for device manufacturers to “integrate” them into their system-on-chip (SoC) layouts. Arm claims that this new physical implementation solution will help other companies bring devices to market faster, which, if true, means we may see more devices equipped with the Arm Cortex-X925 and Immortalis G925.

Arm states that smartphones featuring its new core designs are expected to be available by the end of 2024, but no specific brands were mentioned.

However, MediaTek Vice President JC Hsu stated in Arm’s press release: “MediaTek is committed to supporting the latest Armv9 Cortex-X925 CPU and Immortalis-G925 GPU solutions in the next-generation flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9400, to be launched later this year.”

Currently, there are not many smartphones using Arm Cortex and Immortalis designs. In mobile chips, it is more common to pair Cortex with other GPU designs.
