The US-China trade war started in 2018, and in October 2022, the US imposed regulatory controls on semiconductor-related products exported to China. The one-year exemption for TSMC’s Nanjing plant will expire on May 31, but TSMC announced yesterday (23rd) that it has received an indefinite exemption from the US.
In October 2022, the US imposed stricter export control requirements on certain high-speed computing chips and semiconductor production items when exported to specific countries. However, Korean semiconductor companies like Samsung received an indefinite exemption for semiconductor equipment controls in China, while TSMC’s Nanjing subsidiary only received a one-year exemption from the US government, drawing widespread attention.
With the May 31 expiration date approaching, TSMC announced yesterday that the US Department of Commerce recently issued a “Validated End-User” (VEU) authorization to TSMC (Nanjing) Co., Ltd., confirming that items and services subject to US export control regulations can continue to be provided to the TSMC Nanjing plant long-term without suppliers needing individual licenses, allowing the Nanjing plant to maintain its current operations.
TSMC stated that the VEU authorization does not grant new privileges but confirms that items and services subject to US export control regulations can continue to be provided to TSMC (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. long-term without suppliers needing individual licenses. This VEU authorization allows TSMC (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. to maintain its current semiconductor production status.
