Breaking News: FedEx Takes on Amazon in E-Commerce

FedEx announced today that it will launch a new ‘data-driven business platform’ called fdx in the fall of this year. The platform will provide online businesses with ‘end-to-end e-commerce solutions,’ including supply chain management data. Built on the services provided by ShopRunner, an online e-commerce store acquired by the company in 2020, fdx will integrate new features with existing ones. This includes offering customers estimated delivery dates during shopping and ordering, as well as providing carbon impact data for supply chain resources.

FedEx states that when fdx is launched in the fall, it will leverage its data to enhance ‘more efficient and cost-effective delivery’ functions. The FedEx system will also implement a ‘customized post-purchase experience’ to provide more accurate shipping information for brand merchants.

This move seems aimed at competing with Amazon, which FedEx has long considered a threat to its business. In 2019, FedEx refused to renew contracts for shipping Amazon goods through its services. Later that year, Amazon banned its sellers from using FedEx for Prime deliveries during holidays, citing performance issues—Amazon lifted this ban the following year.

Like UPS, FedEx has been facing setbacks against Amazon, with Amazon surpassing both FedEx and UPS in household parcel deliveries in the United States by 2022. Amazon established its logistics business in just a few years, mainly utilizing tightly controlled third-party contractors, which it insists are not its employees.

Meanwhile, Amazon continues to build its own logistics business, primarily using a tightly controlled third-party contractor fleet. This strategy has proven effective, and the company now ships more packages than UPS or FedEx.
