Microsoft plans to add an “Advanced Settings” panel to Windows 11 through Dev Home. This new panel allows better control of the operating system’s built-in settings or behaviors, such as altering the appearance of folder icons in File Explorer.
With the release of Windows 11 Moment 4, Microsoft has introduced numerous new features to the operating system through app updates and additional functionalities. They’ve updated several stock applications and introduced new ones, including Dev Home, which now features a new “Advanced Settings” panel.
It has been discovered on GitHub that Microsoft intends to incorporate “Advanced Settings” options within the Dev Home application. All Windows 11 users will be able to manage features like “Show file extensions,” “Display hidden files and system files,” or “Display full path in the title” through this new “Settings” page.
The current ability to enable or disable these functions through File Explorer’s folder view or the registry will soon be unified within the Dev Home application for the centralized management of all Windows 11 advanced settings.
Dev Home serves as a sandbox experience specifically designed for developers within Windows 11. Developers can utilize it to enhance and customize their development projects using extensions. While it primarily caters to developers and advanced users, there seems to be a shift in its usage now.
According to Microsoft, the new “Settings” page will “offer developers more system settings and advanced behavioral control,” providing users with finer control and a more cohesive user interface experience. The Settings page will also facilitate easy scripting and reapplication across new and/or existing machines.
There’s a fervent discussion ongoing on GitHub, with developers expressing their opinions. Many appreciate this change, while some have their reservations. One developer suggests that the new “Attach File Explorer” feature should be made available to all users at the operating system level.
This move has caught the attention of developers. Introducing more features in Windows 11 is always welcomed, and Dev Home stands as one of the best new features, albeit niche.
However, Microsoft has clarified that the newly added “Advanced Settings” in Windows 11 are not meant to replace existing settings in the “Settings” app.
