In fact, Yu Chengdong also has a lesser-known identity – he was once a top student majoring in precision instruments in the Department of Automatic Control at Northwestern Polytechnical University. From a poor child in a remote mountain village to a top student majoring in precision instruments at a prestigious school.
In 1969, Yu Chengdong was born in a remote village in Huoqiu County, in the Dabie Mountains region.
In a media interview, Yu Chengdong once recalled his childhood, revealing that he grew up in impoverished conditions in a remote mountain village, often relying on drinking rice gruel. During his primary and secondary school years, he couldn’t even afford to eat vegetables that cost just a few cents.
Although he grew up in poverty, it didn’t deter his strong desire to change his fate through education.
From elementary school to high school, Yu Chengdong consistently excelled in his studies, always ranking first in his class.
However, Yu Chengdong’s father, who lived in a remote mountain village, believed that the elusive 100 points on an exam paper were far less tangible than the hard work done in the fields. Therefore, during Yu Chengdong’s high school years, his father repeatedly tried to persuade him to give up his studies and return to the village to farm.
In order to avoid dropping out of school, Yu Chengdong pleaded with his father: “Can’t I come back to help with farming during busy seasons and go to school during the farming off-season?”
Yu Chengdong admitted that the most significant and important decision in his life was choosing to continue his education.
To continue his studies, even on the eve of the college entrance examination, when other students were diligently preparing for the exam, Yu Chengdong had to take time to return to the village and help with farming.
Although juggling farm work at home consumed a significant amount of his time for exam preparation, Yu Chengdong, who saw pursuing higher education as the path for an underprivileged child to succeed, was determined and fought against all odds.
In 1987, Yu Chengdong indeed made a name for himself by achieving outstanding results and becoming the top scorer in the county’s college entrance examination in the science and engineering category.
Yu Chengdong successfully enrolled in a prestigious national university, Northwestern Polytechnical University, majoring in precision instruments in the Department of Automatic Control, becoming a freshman with a bright future ahead.

During his university years, he participated in a national-level key laboratory project focused on automation control systems
During his studies in the Precision Instruments major within the Department of Automatic Control at Northwestern Polytechnical University, Yu Chengdong was dedicated and diligent.
He immersed himself in learning the intricacies of automatic control and precision instruments, enthusiastically engaging in practical projects. Yu Chengdong’s performance in these projects was remarkable, and he actively participated in a national-level key laboratory project focused on automation control systems.
In this project, Yu Chengdong took on responsibilities such as software programming and system debugging, gaining valuable experience in the process.
While deeply committed to his academic and practical pursuits, Yu Chengdong also enthusiastically participated in various extracurricular activities, honing his overall skills.
He once served as a student union officer in college, actively organizing a variety of activities, including cultural evenings and sports events. These experiences not only enriched his university life but also enhanced his organizational and managerial abilities.
The organizational and managerial experience gained during his university years laid a solid foundation for Yu Chengdong to become an effective leader in later years when he took charge of Huawei’s Terminal BG and Intelligent Automotive Solutions BU.
In 1991, Yu Chengdong graduated with honors from Northwestern Polytechnical University’s Precision Instruments program within the Department of Automatic Control. After graduation, he remained at the university and worked as a teacher in the Aircraft Engineering department for two years.
Two years later, Yu Chengdong achieved outstanding results and successfully gained admission to Tsinghua University’s Department of Electronic Engineering, specializing in Electronics and Communication Engineering at the graduate level.
