According to the latest test results from tech media outlet ComputerBase, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card can also be powered using three 8-pin power cables, though its performance will drop by approximately 5%.
The default TDP of the RTX 5090 is 575W, and the official recommendation is to use a 600W 12V-2×6 connector or four 8-pin PCI power cables.
However, testing shows that the RTX 5090 can still start with only three 8-pin power cables (total power of 450W), but its TDP will be limited to 450W.
In this scenario, the RTX 5090’s performance will be somewhat affected, with an average FPS drop of about 5%. However, this performance loss may not be noticeable in actual use, making it a reasonable trade-off for users looking to avoid upgrading their power system.
In comparison, the RTX 5080 graphics card has a TDP of 360W and stricter power requirements. Testing found that the RTX 5080 cannot start when using only two 8-pin power cables (total power of 300W).
This suggests that NVIDIA’s firmware does not support lower power configurations for the RTX 5080, whereas the RTX 5090 can automatically adjust performance when it detects insufficient power.
This means RTX 5090 users may experience a slight performance loss when using three 8-pin power cables but can still use the GPU normally.
On the other hand, RTX 5080 users must ensure they use at least three 8-pin power cables or a 12V-2×6 connector, or else the graphics card will not function.
