Infineon Launches Construction of Thai Power Module Plant

On January 14, 2024 local time, Infineon Technologies officially broke ground on its power semiconductor module manufacturing plant in the Bang Phli District of Samut Prakan, south of Bangkok. This will further support Infineon in diversifying its manufacturing footprint.

The first building of the power semiconductor module manufacturing plant is planned to begin operations in early 2026, with further capacity ramp-up to be managed flexibly based on market demand. All expenses for the new plant are already included in Infineon’s capital expenditure forecast for 2025. The project has also received support from the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI). As global decarbonization and climate protection efforts drive demand for power modules, including for industrial applications and renewable energy, this highly automated power semiconductor module manufacturing plant will play a key role in diversifying Infineon’s manufacturing landscape.

“Decarbonization and digitalization are strong structural growth drivers for the semiconductor industry, and we are establishing a state-of-the-art power semiconductor backend manufacturing facility in Thailand to meet future customer needs and enhance supply chain resilience. This investment is a key step in our strategy to further diversify our manufacturing footprint and optimize costs while expanding our front-end capacities,” said Rutger Wijburg, Chief Operating Officer of Infineon. “Our new backend site is designed to operate with efficiency, flexibility, and quality, ensuring that we can reliably deliver high-quality products to our customers.”

“The Board of Investment of Thailand welcomes and supports Infineon Technologies’ decision to invest in the new power semiconductor backend manufacturing plant in Samut Prakan. This strategic move highlights the importance of the close and reliable partnership between Infineon and the Thai government, and demonstrates mutual confidence in Thailand’s business environment and growth potential. With the establishment of the National Semiconductor and Advanced Electronics Policy Committee in December 2024, combined with Infineon’s investment, it will significantly enhance the semiconductor industry and ecosystem in the region, positioning Thailand as a key player in the global semiconductor sector. We are committed to supporting the development of Thailand’s electronics industry and the successful implementation of Infineon’s manufacturing expansion in the region,” said Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary-General of the Board of Investment of Thailand.

Infineon stated that it will support the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Thailand, located at the heart of Southeast Asia, covering key components and materials in the supply chain. By strengthening partnerships with local businesses and institutions, Infineon will also contribute to the development of the semiconductor ecosystem and skilled workforce. Through close collaboration with universities and local entrepreneurs, Infineon is helping develop a high-skilled engineering talent pool with advanced semiconductor expertise. A comprehensive training and education program has been developed to enhance capabilities in AI, digitalization, and automation. The first batch of Thai engineers successfully completed this training program at other Infineon plants.

Infineon is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, so decarbonization is an integral part of the design and construction of the new facility. Reducing the carbon footprint across the entire value chain remains a strategic priority for the company. The new plant will be equipped with solar panels to generate its own renewable energy. In addition, Infineon will work closely with local energy providers to ensure a reliable and green power supply.
